Philadephia Updates Fair Criminal Records Screening Standards

Effective March 14, 2016, Employers in the City of Philadelphia will no longer be able to ask job candidates questions about previous criminal convictions or to conduct a criminal background check until after a conditional offer of employment is made. The updated ordinance also specifically prohibits the use of a form that includes a question regarding criminal convictions - even if it instructs the candidates not to answer until after an offer of employment is made.

Virginia College Student Background Checks Under Scrutiny

Although Virginia law requires public and private colleges to submit to Virginia State Police a list of names of all admitted students so that the names can be checked against the National Sex Offender List and the Virginia Criminal Information Network, some lawmakers feel that this is not enough, especially in light of the recent arrest of Jesse Matthew, Jr., charged with the abduction of missing UVA Student, Hannah Graham.  Mr.

Minnesota to Test Fingerprinting System for Caregivers

In a recent article, Chris Serres, (Star Tribune, July 19, 2014) reported that the Minnesota Department of Human Services will begin testing a new a electronic system of fingerprint based background checks for caregivers.  It is their hope that by January every newly hired worker who cares for children, the elderly and people with disabilities be required to be fingerprinted and photographed.  Continue reading ->
