A recent article by US News & World Report author, Kenneth T. Walsh highlights the twelve most important decisions President Obama has made during his first 100 days in office (http://www.usnews.com/listings/important-obama-decisions/intro).

  1. The Economic Stimulus – Obama let Democrats take the lead in crafting the $757 billion economic stimulus package rather than submitting his own plan.

  1. Bailouts – The President moved quickly to bail out some of the nation’s biggest banks and investment houses and to rescue automakers.

  1. Healthcare Overhaul – Obama continues to lead the charge to overhaul healthcare swiftly – even at the risk of overloading the political system with big ticket priorities.

  1. Withdrawal from Iraq – Although he’s had to push the date back a bit, the President has promised to withdraw troops from Iraq within 19 months of his taking office.

  1. Sending Troops to Afghanistan – Obama announced that he would send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan to fight terrorism.

  1. Closing Guantanamo – Obama has set a goal of eventually closing the detention facility for suspected terrorists.

  1. Cuba Policy – The President relaxed travel and financial restrictions on Cuban-Americans.

  1. Stem Cell Research – Obama has reversed the Bush administration policy on federally funded stem cell research.

  1. Harsh Interrogation – The Obama administration placed a ban on harsh interrogation techniques in questioning suspected terrorists. They also released memos detailing methods used under the Bush administration.

  1. Cabinet Nominations – The President botched several cabinet nominations, most notably nominating Tom Daschele to be Secretary of Health & Human Services before taking an in-depth look into his background.

  1. Clinton Aides – Despite his call for bringing change to Washington, Obama brought former advisors to Bill Clinton back into government, choosing experience over change.

  1. Somali Pirates – Obama authorized Navy SEALS to kill the three pirates who were holding an American Captain hostage aboard a lifeboat off the coast of Somalia. Captain Richard Phillips was rescued and the incident demonstrated the President’s resolve.
